Sensory Friendly Costume Ideas

October is flying by and before we know it, Halloween will be here. For many this is a time of fun! Carving pumpkins, eating candy, and wearing your costume are all highlights of the holiday. The idea of finding the perfect costume can be a daunting task for many children, but those who are on the Autism spectrum or have sensory processing disorder, the task can become extremely difficult. This year, PHI has got you covered. Here are some of our favorite ideas for sensory friendly costumes this Halloween!

  1. Superhero
  2. Donut
  3. Dinosaur
  4. Ghost
  5. Penguin
  6. Skeleton
  7. Jack-O-Lantern
  8. Bumble Bee
  9. Painter
  10. Astronaut

All of these costumes could be a fun DIY project for you and your child or they can be ordered online. It all depends on what works best for you and your family. This is just a small list of ideas for this Halloween, but there are many more out there for your child to choose from.

The important thing to remember is although these costumes may work for some children, they will not work for others. Everyone is different. Different interests, needs, and likes/dislikes will heavily influence what your child wears on Halloween. No matter how elaborate or simple the costume is, as long as they are happy, comfortable, and enjoying themselves, it doesn’t matter what they have on.

PHI wishes everyone a safe and fun Halloween!
